The Washington Nationals have sent top pitching prospect Stephen Strasburg to the minor leagues. Strasburg was the No. 1 pick in last year's draft and there had been a lot of speculation about where he would start this season. He was optioned to Double-A Harrisburg on Saturday. The 21-year-old Strasburg has been the Nationals' best pitcher in spring training.
Cliff Lee's eventful first spring with the Seattle Mariners continued on Friday when the lefty ace was diagnosed with a lower right abdominal strain that will cost him at least a week of spring training. Lee was examined in Seattle on Friday by team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan. Lee underwent an ultrasound and was given a platelet-rich plasma injection.
Chris Heisey had a pinch-hit, two-run homer -- the first of four off left-hander Jason Vargas -- and the Cincinnati Reds powered their way to a 6-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners, who lost outfielder Milton Bradley to another ejection. Bradley was thrown out by plate umpire Jon Merry in the fourth inning for tossing his bat after taking a called third strike.
Tweaking the postseason schedule. Eliminating the link between the All-Star game and World Series. Adding replay for fair-or-foul calls down the lines. Oh, and a message to the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers: Hurry up! Baseball is looking to make adjustments. Some soon, others later. Some significant, others subtle.
Rockies closer Huston Street will likely miss the season opener after experiencing tightness in his right shoulder. Street has been hampered by inflammation in his pitching shoulder and has yet to throw in an exhibition game, putting him behind schedule. He threw about 25 pitches Monday and said afterward that his arm "felt great" but had discomfort during his throwing session the next...
Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully was released from the hospital Friday after bumping his head, and is looking forward to broadcasting a Dodgers exhibition game this weekend. The 82-year-old Scully went to the hospital Thursday night as a precaution after he got up from bed too quickly, fell and hit his head, team spokesman Josh Rawitch said.
Boston Red Sox minor league prospect Ryan Westmoreland has been out of the intensive care unit and into the neuro rehabilitation unit at the St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix on Friday. According to Dr. Robert Spetzler, Westmoreland's neurosurgeon and the director of Barrow Neurological Institute, Westmoreland will undergo physical and occupational therapy.
Alex Rodriguez hit a long solo homer, CC Sabathia allowed two runs in 5 1-3 innings and the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 6-2 in a split-squad game on Friday. Rodriguez hit his first homer, a towering drive over the scoreboard in left in the third off Rick Porcello, who was charged with four runs -- one earned -- and four hits over three innings.
Johan Santana's outing against his former team elicited fond memories if not a positive result. Santana lasted 3 1-3 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs in the News York Mets' 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday. "I had a great time over there, great seasons over there," said Santana, who the Twins traded to New York following the 2007 season.
Josh Beckett pitched 3 1-3 innings after missing his last start because of an illness, allowing four runs on six hits as the Boston Red Sox lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-7 on Friday. Beckett, who walked two and struck out one, was slated to pitch Sunday against the Minnesota Twins but was a late scratch.
