Mitchell & Ness Washington Redskins 1947 poly-knit dark Sammy Baugh jersey tackle twill # 33 On July 9, 1932 the Washington Redskin franchise was established in Boston under the Braves nickname. Ownership named the team the Boston Braves after the National Baseball Leagues Boston Braves, in whose field they played. The Redskin nickname formed after they moved their home field to the historic Fenway Park. In 1937, after lack of fan support, the Redskins moved to Washington, D.C. The Redskins acquired ‘Slingin’ Sammy Baugh, who became known for revolutionizing the quarterback position through the development of a consistent passing game. Baugh helped bolster the Redskins offense, leading them to a NFL title in 1942. Not only was Baugh an innovator at the quarterback position, but he also established himself as a successful punter and defensive back. In 1947, the Redskins held a day to honor Baugh at Griffith Stadium. It was on Sammy Baugh Day that Baugh himself connected for 6 touchdown passes while throwing for 355 yards in a defeat over the Chicago Cardinals. Baugh retired from the NFL in 1952 and returned to his small home town in Texas.
