York Jets - Team History
New York Jets, professional football team and one of five teams in
the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of
the National Football League (NFL). Formerly called the Titans, the
Jets play at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and wear
uniforms of green and white. In 1969 the Jets, then
members of the American Football League (AFL), recorded one of the
most dramatic upsets in professional football history, stunning
the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. The team was led by head
coach Weeb Ewbank, wide receiver Don Maynard, and charismatic quarterback
Joe Namath. New York joined the NFL in 1970. The club fielded several
powerful squads during the 1980s, reaching the playoffs four times
from 1981 to 1986. Starring on those teams were running back Freeman
McNeil, quarterback Richard Todd, and defensive linemen Mark Gastineau
and Joe Klecko.
The New York Titans became
charter members of the AFL in 1960, naming former quarterback great
Sammy Baugh as their first head coach. The team enjoyed modest success
during its first eight seasons, finishing second in the Eastern
Division three times. In 1963 Weeb Ewbank was named head coach,
and the team’s name was changed to the Jets because the team’s
home, Shea Stadium, is located between New York’s John F.
Kennedy International and La Guardia Airports.
The Jets produced back-to-back
rookies of the year in 1964 and 1965—running back Matt Snell
and Joe Namath. In 1967 Namath became the first professional quarterback
to throw for more than 4,000 yards in one season. Don Maynard led
the league in receiving yards that season; he eventually became
the AFL’s career leader in yards and receptions.
In 1968 Namath directed
New York to the AFL championship. He then brashly predicted a victory
over the heavily favored NFL-champion Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl
III. Namath delivered on his promise as the Jets shocked the Colts
16-7. Ewbank, who coached the Baltimore Colts to an NFL Championship
in 1959 (before the Super Bowl was played between the NFL and AFL),
became the only head coach to win championships in both leagues,
and Namath was named AFL most valuable player (MVP).
New York repeated as
AFL Eastern Division champions in 1969, and the team joined the
NFL a year later when the NFL and AFL completed their merger. Despite
rosters that featured Namath, running back John Riggins, and wide
receiver Wesley Walker, the team managed only one second-place finish
during its first 11 seasons in the league.
The Jets made back-to-back
playoff appearances in 1981 and 1982, led by Richard Todd, Freeman
McNeil, Mark Gastineau, and Joe Klecko. In 1981 the team led the
NFL in quarterback sacks as Gastineau notched 20 and Klecko totaled
20½. New York reached the AFC Championship Game in the 1982
season but was defeated by the Miami Dolphins, 14-0. Around this
time the Jets’ intimidating defensive line became known as
the New York Sack Exchange; the nickname was derived from the fact
that New York City houses the New York Stock Exchange.
New York’s performance
was sporadic during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Leading players
included McNeil, quarterback Ken O’Brien, and wide receiver
Al Toon. Quarterback Boomer Esiason joined the Jets in 1993, but
the franchise encountered repeated frustration, including placing
last in its division in 1996. At the end of the 1996 season, the
Jets traded four draft picks to the New England Patriots to gain
the right to hire coach Bill Parcells, who had guided both the New
York Giants and the Patriots to Super Bowl appearances.
Under Parcells’s
direction, the Jets had a remarkable turnaround. In 1997 they finished
with a 9-7 win-loss record and barely missed the playoffs. In 1998
they posted a 12-4 win-loss record in the regular season and captured
the Eastern Division title behind the play of quarterback Vinny
Testaverde, running back Curtis Martin, and receiver Keyshawn Johnson.
During the playoffs the Jets defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars before
falling to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

Jets Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)<p><p>At one point in the 2007 season, defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was asked about how the Jets' defensive personnel didn't quite fit their 3-4 scheme. He began his reply by telling the questioner, "We've been down that road before."</p>
<p>Another road the Jets traveled in 2007 appears to be on their itinerary again. That is, the offseason contract dispute with a disgruntled veteran that spills into training camp.</p> <p>Last season, the man at the center of the controversy was left guard Pete Kendall, who wanted a $1 million raise for the 2007 season, and held almost-daily briefings with the media in which he aired his grievances.</p> <p>That dubious distinction in 2008 has gone to Chris Baker, who is unhappy with the $683,500 he is scheduled to make this season in the third year of...

Judge gives Jets fan time to amend Patriots suit (AP)A federal judge has given a New York Jets season-ticket holder more time to amend a lawsuit that seeks millions from the New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick for "deceiving customers" by videotaping opponents' signals. The lawsuit by Carl J. Mayer, filed in September, was due to be dismissed June 30 because of a lack of activity.
Kevin Jones: (Knee) Working Out Next Weekend (RotoWire)
Former Lion Jones gearing up for comeback in NFL (AP)Kevin Jones darted to the right, planted his foot, pivoted and sprinted back across a patch of grass. "That is what teams can't believe I can do," Jones said Thursday morning after doing a shuttle run in 4.3 seconds. Soon, NFL teams will get a chance to witness what seems like a remarkable comeback from ACL surgery.
Jets sign S Worrell (PA SportsTicker)The New York Jets on Wednesday signed free agent safety Cameron Worrell.
Cross leaves post as Jets president (AP)Jay Cross resigned as president of the New York Jets on Tuesday after eight years with the team to accept a position as president of Related Hudson Yards. The Jets also named Mike Tannenbaum executive vice president-general manager, Matt Higgins executive vice president of business operations and Thad Sheely executive vice president of stadium development and finance.
Ex-Giants GM Accorsi hired by NFL as consultant (AP)Former New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi has been hired as a consultant to the NFL and will co-chair a new general managers advisory committee. NFL executive vice president Ray Anderson said Monday that Accorsi will focus on assisting the league in monitoring compliance with rules and policies, and achieving better communication with senior club football personnel.
MetLife is first Meadowlands stadium sponsor (AP)MetLife Inc. became the first of five major sponsors for the new Meadowlands stadium the New York Giants and Jets football teams will call home. The deal was announced Monday, with no word on how much the insurance and financial services company will pay the teams for the advertising space. A marketing expert said the deal could bring in $10 million to $15 million annually.

Jets' Jones puts frustrations, McFadden talk behind him (AP)Thomas Jones heard all the talk and refused to let it bother him. In the months following the New York Jets' dismal 4-12 season, many fans and members of the media insisted running back Darren McFadden would be a perfect fit for a team needing a big-time playmaker. "Honestly, I never was concerned about it," the Jets' starting running back said tersely.
Jets sign sixth-round pick Henry (PA SportsTicker)HEMPSTEAD, New York (Ticker) - The New York Jets on Friday signed wide receiver Marcus Henry, their sixth-round pick in April.
Jets' Baker reiterates frustration about contract dispute (AP)Disgruntled tight end Chris Baker spent most of the New York Jets' minicamp Friday on a stationary bike. There was no backpedalling, though, from his scathing comments a day earlier about his contract dispute with the team. "I wanted to actually just have it done quietly and just come out here and play and not worry about anything," said Baker, who tweaked his back early in the morning practice and...
Jets' top pick Gholston arrives in minicamp (AP)Vernon Gholston's first big test of minicamp came before he even stepped on the field Friday for the New York Jets. "I've got a lot of catching up to do," the sixth overall draft pick said with a smile. "The first time I walked in there, I barely knew any guys and I had to name them all." That's hardly an easy task when there are 85 players on the minicamp roster.
Jets' Baker unhappy with contract situation (AP)Chris Baker isn't happy with his contract, and he made sure everyone knew it on the first day of the New York Jets' mandatory minicamp Thursday. "If the situation was better, of course I'd want to be here," Baker said, "but the way things are right now, I really don't have the desire to be out here right now at this moment." Baker, who has asked to be traded, is disgruntled because he insists the...
