Jacksonville
Jaguars - Team History
Jacksonville Jaguars, professional football team and one of six teams
in the Central Division of the American Football Conference (AFC)
of the National Football League (NFL). Under the league’s realignment
plan, which will take affect in 2002, the Jaguars will play in the
South Division of the AFC. The Jaguars play at ALLTEL Stadium in Jacksonville,
Florida, and wear uniforms of teal, black, and gold.
Jacksonville
joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1995. During the Jaguars’
first year, the team fielded the AFC’s worst defense, losing
nine games by more than 24 points. Offensively, however, they were
successful. Mark Brunell—who had previously played in only
two NFL games—posted the highest rating of any expansion-team
quarterback in league history. He also led all NFL quarterbacks
that year in rushing, becoming the first AFC quarterback to run
for more than 400 yards in a season since Mike Pagel of the Baltimore
Colts (now Indianapolis Colts) in 1983. Overall, Jacksonville’s
offensive performance ranked third all-time among first-year franchises.
In 1996 the
Jaguars won nine games and earned a wild-card berth to the playoffs.
Wide receivers Keenan McCardell and Jimmy Smith each compiled 1,000
or more yards receiving. Brunell passed for more than 4,300 yards
and was Jacksonville’s third-leading rusher, averaging five
yards per carry and scoring three touchdowns. In the playoffs the
Jaguars advanced to the AFC title game, where they lost to the New
England Patriots.
Jacksonville
advanced to the playoffs again in 1997 but lost in the first round
to the Denver Broncos. In 1998 Brunell and rookie running back Fred
Taylor led the team to a 11-5 win-loss record and the Central Division
championship. They defeated the New England Patriots in the first
round of the playoffs before being bested by the New York Jets.
In 1999 Jacksonville repeated as Central Division champions but
lost to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game.
Trying to do his best "Tebowing," Alec Baldwin got a bit of help on stage. The host of "NFL Honors" on NBC was kneeling down when Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow stepped up and showed Baldwin how it's really done. "Bless you, Tim," Baldwin responded. That capped a nearly 10-minute monologue Saturday night on the eve of the Super Bowl as The Associated Press...
Former New Orleans Saints special teams standout and current ALS patient Steve Gleason can't help but wonder whether his football career contributed to his debilitating and ultimately fatal neuromuscular disease.

The Jaguars started a new era with an old name as their new head coach.

Back in 2003, former owner Wayne Weaver picked Jack Del Rio as the coach over Mike Mularkey, then the offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh.

This time, under new owner Shad Khan and general manager Gene Smith, about to finish his fourth year, they picked Mularkey even though his career has hit some speed bumps in the last decade.

He was 14-18 in two years as a head coach in Buffalo and then quit after going 5-11 in the 2005 season with J.P. Losman at quarterback. That led to general manager Tom Donahoe getting fired and Marv Levy taking over as the team's chief executive.

Mularkey decided to quit even though he knew he might never get another chance.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Chapel Hill police say the son of new Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey is among three former North Carolina athletes arrested for possession of cocaine.
Chapel Hill police say the son of new Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey is among three former North Carolina athletes arrested for possession of cocaine. Police say Shane Michael Mularkey was among the three arrested. The 21-year-old Mularkey played in all 13 games for the Tar Heels in 2009, but school spokesman Kevin Best said he left the team after the 2010 season.
To paraphrase Mark Twain in football terms, reports of Peyton Manning's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Whether he will return to the Indianapolis Colts, however, is a topic that continues to be discussed. Monday, team owner Jim Irsay vehemently said he has not decided to...
It was a potentially perfect fit that never happened. But Shahid Khan said if he owned the Jacksonville Jaguars at the time of the draft two years ago the Jaguars definitely would have selected Tim Tebow. "100 percent I would have," Khan, who purchased the team for a...
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew is at the Super Bowl site under less-than-ideal circumstances for him (i.e., he isn't playing in the game), but that doesn't mean that "Pocket Hercules" came to Indianapolis without a plan. We caught up … Continue reading →
Newly named Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio may have come across as "Mile High" during his introductory press conference on Monday afternoon, but if he had listened to his inner circle, he would have never taken the job. … Continue reading →
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - The links and lakes were appealing to Jack Del Rio, just not as enticing as the green grass and white lines of the football field where he's spent most of his life.
If Hawaii ever were to land a professional football team, Brandon Marshall would be its first target. The Miami Dolphins receiver scored a single-game record four touchdowns, finishing with 176 receiving yards to lead the AFC to a 59-41 win over the NFC in the Pro Bowl on Sunday at...
They come from the same coaching tree, disciples of Bill Parcells. That and a no-nonsense approach are what Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick have in common.
