Twins, professional baseball team and one of five teams in the Central
Division of the American League (AL). Named for Minnesota’s
Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the club plays at the Hubert
H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis and wears white pinstriped uniforms
with red trim. The franchise originated as the Washington Senators,
a club that joined the American League at the time of the league’s
formation in 1901.
The
Minnesota Twins reached the playoffs three times from 1961 to 1970,
during the franchise’s first 10 years. The Twins first won
the World Series in 1987. The club won another Series title in 1991.
Both championship teams were led by manager Tom Kelly and perennial
.300 hitter and All-Star outfielder Kirby Puckett.
Two
of the greatest Twins players were slugger Harmon Killebrew and
line-drive hitter Rod Carew. Killebrew won six AL home run titles
and ranks in the top ten on the all-time home run list with 573.
Carew, recognized as the best pure hitter of his day, won seven
league batting crowns and compiled a career .328 average—among
the best averages recorded in the second half of the 20th century.
The
Twins joined the league in 1961 when, despite pleas from the Congress
of the United States and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, AL officials
reluctantly allowed Washington Senators owner Calvin Griffith to
relocate his club to Minneapolis. Sam Mele was named manager in
1961 and in 1965 led the Twins to the AL pennant with sluggers Harmon
Killebrew, Tony Oliva and Zoilo Versalles. Minnesota’s hitters,
however, succumbed to pitchers Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale of
the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
In 1969
Minnesota captured the division title under the stormy leadership
of first-year manager Billy Martin. Killebrew provided the offensive
power and won the AL most valuable player (MVP) award. Rod Carew
captured the first of his seven batting titles, Oliva led the AL
in hits and doubles, and pitchers Dave Boswell and Jim Perry each
won 20 games. Despite solid hitting and pitching by the Twins, the
Baltimore Orioles swept the AL Championship Series (ALCS). Minnesota
returned to the playoffs in 1970 behind Perry, whose 24-12 win-loss
record earned him the Cy Young Award, but the Twins were once again
swept in the ALCS by the Orioles.
Minnesota’s
third base coach, Tom Kelly, became manager in 1986 and turned the
Twins into World Series champions in 1987. Outfielders Tom Brunansky
and Kirby Puckett, first baseman Kent Hrbek, and third baseman Gary
Gaetti each hit at least 28 home runs that year, while Frank Viola,
Bert Blyleven, and reliever Jeff Reardon led a strong pitching staff.
Minnesota upset the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS and went on to defeat
the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Kelly was named AL
manager of the year.
Although
Minnesota finished last in 1990, pitchers Scott Erickson and Jack
Morris helped turn the team around in 1991, taking the Twins to
another AL pennant. Kelly again earned top managing honors as Minnesota
defeated the Atlanta Braves in the 1991 World Series. However, the
Twins struggled during most of the remainder of the 1990s.

Twins Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)<p><p>Left-hander Brian Duensing didn't see his call up coming. In fact, when his phone rang Thursday morning, good news was not at all on his mind.</p>
<p>Duensing had driven from Rochester, N.Y., to Buffalo, N.Y., on Wednesday night to avoid an early-morning bus ride for the Class AAA Red Wings' game against Buffalo on Thursday. So when his phone rang, Duensing said he thought he might be in trouble for going on ahead of the team. Not so much. </p>
<p>Duensing was in the bullpen for Friday's game against Detroit, and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said that once Duensing, who was a starter for Rochester, gets used to the quick warmups required for relief work, he'll be used in a variety of ways.</p>
<p>"We've got all kinds of options," Gardenhire said.

Twins' Slowey placed on DL with strained wrist (AP)Minnesota Twins right-hander Kevin Slowey was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained wrist following his start against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Slowey, who was trying to become the majors' first 11-game winner, gave up a season-worst six runs on five hits in three innings in Minnesota's 11-9 loss in 16 innings.
APNewsBreak: Target Field to open April 12 (AP)Target Field has a target date. Outdoor baseball is tentatively set to return to Minneapolis on April 12 when the Minnesota Twins play their 2010 home opener against the Boston Red Sox. The date was contained in a draft schedule for next season that recently was sent to teams and revealed Friday to The Associated Press.
Power Rankings: Angels are ascending (Yahoo! Sports)The Dodgers and Red Sox continue to occupy the top two spots, but the other L.A. team is making a push.
Twins swap lefties in bullpen, Henn for Duensing (AP)The Minnesota Twins have made another move with their bullpen, bringing up Brian Duensing and sending down Sean Henn. The Twins said Thursday they will recall the left-handed Duensing from Triple-A Rochester before Friday's game against Detroit. The left-handed Henn was assigned to Rochester, where he'd been pitching before his contract was purchased on May 19.
Mauer's best rap is with a bat (Yahoo! Sports)Joe Mauer probably won't hit .400, but the hometown hero does everything else well … maybe even sing.

Soon, he'll have enough plate appearances. Mauer went 3-for-3 Wednesday in the Minnesota Twins' 5-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals, raising his average to .392. Twins catcher Redmond leaves game (AP)Minnesota catcher Mike Redmond left the game against Kansas City in the fifth inning Wednesday after getting hit by a foul tip. The club said he was struck in the right forearm. X-rays were negative. He left the field with assistance after staying on the ground a few minutes. The Twins said he would be day to day.
KC catcher Olivo suspended 1 game for arguing (AP)Kansas City catcher Miguel Olivo has been suspended for one game for an animated argument with an umpire in Pittsburgh last Saturday. Olivo chose to serve the suspension on Wednesday, which left the Royals without an experienced backup catcher for their game against the Minnesota Twins. John Buck, the other catcher, is rehabbing a back injury.

He didn't believe the Royals missed some early chances against Nick Blackburn. That triple he hit in the seventh inning? Single all the way. Twins Gardenhire ejected against Royals (AP)Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has been ejected in the sixth inning for arguing whether a ball hit Jason Kubel's foot in Monday night's game against Kansas City. With one out in the sixth, Kubel hit a grounder that appeared to hit his foot. Home plate umpire Larry Vanover ruled the ball fair and Royals first baseman Mike Jacobs made the put out at first.
