Phillies Information
Philadelphia
Phillies are one of two Major League Baseball franchises located
within the state of Pennsylvania. The other team in the state
is the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both teams play in the National League.
The old home
stadium of the Phillies was Veterans Stadium. Just next to the
location of this stadium they have their new arena known as Citizens
Bank Park. The park has a seating capacity of 43,500 fans. It
opened on April 9, 2004 and the first baseball game was played
on April 12th. It has natural grass and dirt playing field. Citizens
Bank Park is built on an area of 21 acres at a cost of $346 million.
Philadelphia
Phillies were begun as a franchise in 1883. The franchise was
known as the Philadelphia Blue Jays from 1943-1944. * The Phillies
have 7 Division Titles in there franchise history, making it to
the National League Championship Series in 6 of those postseasons.
As a franchise
the Phillies have made it to the World Series 5 times, and have
won once. Their one World Championship coming in 1980. BUY PHILLIES
TICKETS The Phillies started the season 20 games below .500 and
saw their manager get fired, and saw their best player be traded
away before the end of the season. Third basemen Scott Rolen was
traded to the St. Louis Cardinals shortly after the All-Star Break
when it became apparent that the team would not be able to keep
the star infielder. The Phillies finished the season with an 80-81
record, good enough for third place. The 2003 season would be
the teams last in Veterans Stadium, and expectations were high
after signing free agents Jim Thome, and alter Kevin Millwood.
However, the team would fail to meet these expectations going
86-76 and again missing the playoffs. The team would try to find
the missing ingredient to a Division Title by acquiring Billy
Wagner at the end of the season. Wagner would sit on the disabled
list twice during the 2004 season, and would only appear in 45
games as a closer. Other injuries hurt the Phillies chances, as
the team finished with the identical record as the season before
(86-76). Jim Thome hit 42 home runs and drove in 105 runs, making
his second year in Philadelphia a success.
Philadelphia Phillies minor league pitcher Alvaro Bacil has been suspended 50 games after a positive drug test. The right-handed Bacil was suspended Friday after testing positive for a metabolite of Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance that violates the minor league drug program. Bacil went 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 appearances for the Phillies' Dominican summer league team.
For the closing month of the MLB regular season, some real challenges (and no peeking at the answers or sources below): No. 1: Now that we all have computers, we're all able to share some truly useless baseball statistics such as the following: Going into this September, according to STATS L.L.C. and The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Pirates' Charlie Morton had the third worst ERA since 1952 among pitchers who had at least 10 decisions, 10.03.
<p>Charlie Manuel doesn't want any of his players worn down, especially at the beginning of September, with every game carrying more meaning and a playoff berth on the line. With all of that in mind, the Phillies manager rested starting catcher Carlos Ruiz for the second time in three games.</p>
<p>The Phillies are at the tail end of a stretch where they play 25 games in 24 days.</p>
<p>"I just gave Chooch a day," Manuel said, using his catcher's nickname. "I kind of have to watch him, because we still got 29 games to play. I definitely don't want to wear him down."</p>
<p>Ruiz, who is hitting .288 in 96 games this season, has been out of the starting lineup in four of the Phillies' last eight games.
The blurry-eyed Philadelphia Phillies didn't mind that they wouldn't get a lot of shuteye after making their one-night stopover in Denver so worthwhile. Chase Utley drove in six runs and hit a grand slam to cap a nine-run seventh inning Thursday night as the Phillies overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Colorado Rockies 12-11 in a makeup of a May rainout.
David Wright homered, Johan Santana won for the first time in four starts and New York snapped Atlanta's five-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory Thursday night. The Mets, who had dropped three straight, broke a 13-game stretch in which they scored three runs or less against the NL East-leading Braves.
Roy Oswalt has been one of baseball's most consistent winners down the stretch -- which is exactly what the Philadelphia Phillies were bargaining for when they obtained him just before the July 31 trade deadline. Oswalt pitched one-hit ball into the seventh and the Phillies used leadoff homers by Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino in the first two innings to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on...
After enduring his second-longest home run drought of the season, Ryan Howard wasn't expecting anything big at the plate. After all, most of the balls he'd hit lately ended up in someone's glove. But that changed against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Brian Schneider and Howard each hit a three-run homer to power the Philadelphia Phillies to an 8-4 win Tuesday night, keeping them three games...
Hiroki Kuroda felt he let down the Los Angeles Dodgers' fans when he lost his no-hitter, but the standing ovation he received told a different story.
Hiroki Kuroda didn't realize he had a no-hitter going until the fifth inning. It should have come as no surprise, though. He's been at his best against Philadelphia. Kuroda took his no-hit bid into the eighth and Rod Barajas homered in his home debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who won 3-0 Monday night to move within 5 1/2 games of the Phillies in the NL wild-card race.
Cole Hamels wouldn't mind another trip to his hometown this season. That, of course, would mean a Phillies-Padres playoff series. "It'd be special," Hamels said after shutting down the Padres on four singles in eight innings to lead Philadelphia to a 5-0 victory Sunday that completed a three-game sweep of the bumbling NL West leaders.
The Philadelphia Phillies have gone from inexplicably losing four straight home games to the Houston Astros to taking two close road victories against the San Diego Padres, who have the NL's best record. Shane Victorino had two of Philadelphia's three hits at spacious Petco Park, including a go-ahead triple off Jon Garland in the seventh inning, and the Phillies beat the Padres 3-1 on...

Jimmy Rollins thought he was all but out as he was racing toward a close play at the plate. Turns out he was safe, thanks to his super slide that lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 win over the NL West-leading San Diego Padres in the 12th inning Friday night, three innings after Brad Lidge balked in the tying run.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed right-handed reliever Danys Baez on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms. Taking his place on the roster is left-hander Antonio Bastardo, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Baez is 3-3 with a 5.14 ERA in 45 appearances. Bastardo was recalled for the fourth time this season.
There's something about the Phillies that brings out the best in the Houston Astros. Wandy Rodriguez pitched seven sharp innings, Carlos Lee homered and the Astros beat the Phillies 5-1 Thursday to complete their first four-game sweep in Philadelphia in 11 years. "Houston has been a team that for years has given us problems," Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins said.
RICHMOND, Va. - A fan has been banned for life from Richmond Flying Squirrels home games after a foul ball he threw back onto the field hit the opposing team's pitcher.
