Bryce Harper is one of the best prospects in baseball and certainly seems to have a bright future in front of him. In about two or three seasons he is likely to become one of the best hitters in the game, unless the hype surrounding him has been completely overblown.

The Nationals made a good move by signing right-handed starting pitcher Edwin Jackson to a one-year deal on Thursday. Now, they have the kind of problem that general managers simply smile about—they've got too much starting pitching.

Jackson went 12-9 last year with a 3.79 ERA in 32 games (31 starts with White Sox and then Cardinals) and helped St. Louis rally to get to the playoffs and win the World Series.

He joins an already crowded rotation in Washington.

Gio Gonzalez (16-12, 3.12 with the A's), Stephen Strasburg (1-1, 1.50), Jordan Zimmermann (8-11, 3.18), Chien Ming-Wang (4-3, 4.04) and John Lannan (10-13, 3.70) already were there.

In addition, Ross Detwiler is waiting.

That's why this move would seem to signal that the Nationals will make...

Despite the amount of riches falling on other players, the free-agent market has yet to shower anything on Edwin Jackson. Being a reliable 28-year-old workhorse with occasional "really good stuff" apparently doesn't go as far as it used to. While … Continue reading →
The Washington Nationals won their arbitration case against John Lannan, and will pay the lefty $5 million in 2012, according to the Washington Post. Lannan and the team had a hearing Wednesday to determine whether Lannan should earn the $5.7 million that he requested or the $5...
The Washington Nationals have defeated pitcher John Lannan in baseball's first salary arbitration decision this year. The left-hander will receive the club's offer of $5 million rather than his request for $5.7 million, a three-person panel ruled Thursday. Arbitrators Robert Herzog, Elizabeth Neumeier and John Skonier made the decision a day after hearing arguments.
David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox are likely headed to an arbitration hearing to determine the designated hitter's 2012 salary, according to an ESPN.com report. A hearing isn't scheduled for this week, leaving time to negotiate, the report said, citing a source.
The Washington Nationals have agreed to terms with right-handed reliever Chad Durbin for a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. He went 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA in 56 games last year with the Indians.
If not for football, Tom Brady might have been Joe Mauer before Joe Mauer came along. Or at least a platoon partner for A.J. Pierzynski. Because it's Super Bowl week, writers will exhaust every possible angle on the New England … Continue reading →

With the start of spring training right around the corner, fans of the Washington Nationals have plenty to look forward to this season. Will this be the year the Nationals take it to the next level and claim a National League East championship?
Free agent closer Brad Lidge signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Washington Nationals. Lidge, 35, appeared in 25 games in 2011 because of a right rotator cuff injury, but posted a 1.40 ERA. The Phillies didn't offer him arbitration.
Had the Washington Nationals been able to land Prince Fielder, one of the loudest cheers might have come from Atlanta. Such a signing would have put the Braves in a battle with the New York Mets for the lowest payroll … Continue reading →
