In the past 10 seasons the Mariners have been a pennant contender
in the American League West. For the 2004 Season unfortunately
started off slow, losing their first five games. Finishing in
last place sad to say they were never able to pick it back up.
However the 2004 season for right fielder Ichiro Suzuki was one
that went down in history. It brought the attention of all baseball
fans around the world. May, July, and August he had at least 50
hits per month. On Oct. 1st he hit his 257th and 258th hits of
the season at Safeco Field breaking the 84-year-old hit record.
It was once held by George Sisler since 1920 with 257 hits in
154 games. On August 9th 2004, Edgar Martinez made an announcement
he would retire at the end of the regular season. It was an emotional
farewell. Matinez ended his 22-year playing career with 1,258
RBI’s, 2,240 hits and 308 home runs.
<p>All along, the plan has been for Chone Figgins to start the season at second base and for Jose Lopez to start the season at third.</p>
<p>And while that will probably be the eventual outcome as manager Don Wakamatsu gets his lineup in order down the stretch in Arizona, Seattle will let the two men switch positions.</p>
<p>"Everyone likes what's going on with those guys," Wakamatsu said. "But when Jack (general manager Jack Zduriencik) and I talked today (March 19), we were asking, 'Do we want to look at them playing the other way before we decide?"</p> <p>Both Lopez and Figgins have bought into the original position switch, and since both have long experience at the other positions, it shouldn't take long for them to feel comfortable.</p> <p>The positional flip-flop might give...
Chris Heisey had a pinch-hit, two-run homer -- the first of four off left-hander Jason Vargas -- and the Cincinnati Reds powered their way to a 6-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners, who lost outfielder Milton Bradley to another ejection. Bradley was thrown out by plate umpire Jon Merry in the fourth inning for tossing his bat after taking a called third strike.
Cliff Lee's eventful first spring with the Seattle Mariners continued on Friday when the lefty ace was diagnosed with a lower right abdominal strain that will cost him at least a week of spring training. Lee was examined in Seattle on Friday by team physician Dr. Edward Khalfayan. Lee underwent an ultrasound and was given a platelet-rich plasma injection.
With only four hits in 33 at-bats coming into Thursday's game, Eric Young's days in the Colorado Rockies' major league camp are probably numbered. Tablesetters hitting .121 don't win jobs too often. But the 24-year-old son of former Rockies player Eric Young Sr. felt better Thursday after getting two hits, scoring twice and driving in a run in Colorado's 9-2 win over the Seattle...
The Seattle Mariners have completed their January trade for first baseman Casey Kotchman, sending right-handed pitcher Miguel Celestino to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Boston had earlier received outfielder Bill Hall as part of the deal, which also included a player to be named and cash. The 20-year-old Celestino was 5-3 with a 4.73 ERA in 13 games with the Rookie League's Arizona Mariners.
Nelson Cruz hit two home runs, and Josh Hamilton and Chris Davis also connected as the Texas Rangers scored eight times in the first six innings and cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night. The big news came earlier in the day when Texas manager Ron Washington acknowledged that he tested positive for cocaine last season.
Seattle pitcher Cliff Lee was suspended Wednesday for the first five games of the regular season for throwing over the head of a hitter, possibly delaying his highly anticipated debut with the Mariners. Lee also was fined by Major League Baseball vice president of discipline Bob Watson. The former AL Cy Young winner was ejected from Monday's exhibition game against Arizona after throwing inside...
Former Seattle Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima says he still has plenty to learn in Japan after returning from four seasons in the major leagues. Johjima, the first Japanese catcher to play Major League Baseball, has returned to play for the Hanshin Tigers, one of the most popular teams in Japan. Coming home may seem like an easy transition for the 33-year-old veteran, but Johjima knows there's...
The Seattle Mariners have sent second overall draft choice Dustin Ackley to Double-A West Tennessee, where the impressive 22-year-old will likely begin his first full professional season. Last August, the Mariners and Ackley agreed on a five-year major league contract worth $7.5 million. Seattle has since tried the sweet-swinging former first baseman and outfielder at North Carolina at second base.
The anticipated spring pitching matchup of Seattle ace Cliff Lee and his Arizona counterpart Dan Haren ended abruptly when Lee was tossed from the game for allegedly throwing at the Diamondbacks' Chris Snyder. The blowup came with two outs in the third inning of Arizona's 13-5 victory on Monday when Lee threw one pitch inside, then another that zipped just over Snyder's head.
Seattle Mariners ace Cliff Lee was ejected from a spring training game Monday against Arizona for throwing at Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder. Afterward, Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds called Lee's actions "bush league." With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Lee threw an inside pitch to Snyder, then tossed one just over the batter's head.
The pact went something like this: No nasty pitches to each other. Before the game, Mariners ace Felix Hernandez promised his counterpart, Rockies top hurler Ubaldo Jimenez, he wouldn't throw anything too unhittable when Jimenez was at the plate. Jimenez readily agreed. Yet they struck each other out in Colorado's 5-4 win over the Mariners on Sunday.
San Francisco pitcher Kevin Pucetas continued his spotless spring by retiring all nine Seattle hitters he faced and outfielder Andres Torres homered, doubled and scored three times for a Giants split squad that beat the Mariners 8-4 Saturday. Pucetas has turned it around from last spring when he had an 8.04 ERA and allowed 41 base runners in 15-plus innings.
Chone Figgins and Ken Griffey Jr. are finally on the board. Figgins ended his spring slump with two hits, including a two-run triple during Seattle's four-run fifth inning, and the Mariners tied the Kansas City Royals 6-6 on Friday. Figgins, who signed a free-agent deal with Seattle over the winter, was 0 for 11 this spring.
Tim Lincecum's 19-pitch first inning was an adventure. A leadoff double to Ichiro Suzuki followed by a walk. A flyout, then a strikeout on a double steal. And a two-run single by -- surprise -- old San Francisco teammate Ryan Garko. Eric Byrnes eventually grounded out. Lincecum, the two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, doesn't quite look like himself yet at spring training and struggled...
Brandon League is a walking art gallery. The free-spirited surfer from Hawaii has a body adorned with some of the most elaborate and colorful tattoos in the game. He even has his name scrolled across his shoulders, an ink-into-skin replication of what will be stitched onto the back of his new Mariners jersey this season.
Cliff Lee accomplished his primary objective in his delayed spring debut, then began to work on the rest of his repertoire. The Seattle Mariners' prized offseason acquisition threw 36 of 46 pitches for strikes over three solid innings in a 6-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. "I want to locate fastballs, that's the No.
Jason Vargas is doing everything he can to win a spot in Seattle's rotation. Vargas pitched into the fourth inning in the Mariners' 6-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday, putting together another impressive outing. Vargas, one of four candidates for the No. 5 starter role, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one in 3 2-3 scoreless innings.
