Indians Baseball Merchandise - Hats, Jerseys and Watches
The
2007 Cleveland Indians baseball fans have high expectations for this
talented group of players. Many sports writers have picked the tribe
to win the world series in 2007.
In order for the Indians to make a playoff run they will need big
seasons from Grady Sizemore, Victor Martinez , C.C. Sabathia, Travis
Hafner, and Joe Borowski. The Indians are in one of the toughest divisions
in baseball, the AL Central. The defending AL champ Tigers,
White Sox, Twins,
and Royals make the road to the playoffs
a rough one for any team. These Indians should be favored to win the
AL Central in 2007.

The city
of Cleveland has one of the oldest baseball traditions in the
country. Professional baseball started in Cleveland in 1869 when
the Red Stockings played Forest City. The city was part of the
first professional league called the National Association in 1971,
although that league only lasted one year.
The city
was also represented in the National League in 1879. The franchise
now known as the Indians began as the Cleveland Blues in 1901
as a member of the American League.
They soon
became known as the Naps from 1903-1914 due to their star player
Napoleon Lajoie, before he went to Philadelphia. They were also
briefly known as the Spiders and the Broncos before settling on
the Indians in 1915.
In 1947 the
Indians were the first American League team to break the color
barrier when they hired Larry Doby, the first black man to play
in the junior circuit. Over the years the Indians have enjoyed
a variety of great players such as Stan Coveleski, Bob Feller,
Nap Lajoie, Bob Lemon, Satchel Paige, Gaylord Perry, Frank Robinson,
Tris Speaker, and CY Young. The Indians have had an roller coast
existence. They won the World Series in 1920 and 1948, but have
also gone 40 years without winning the American League Pennant
from 1954 to 1995. Recently they have won the American League
Central Division title from 1995 to 2001.
Austin Kearns hit his first two home runs of the spring and drove in five runs as the Cleveland Indians rolled to a 12-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. Kearns, who has a chance at the Indians' starting left field job, went deep against Dodgers starter Eric Stults and again against reliever Aaron Miller.
Cleveland's medical staff has predicted Kerry Wood could take eight weeks to get back in a major league game. The Indians' closer has his own timetable. "Two months seems like a long time for me," Wood said Sunday. "I don't think it will be that long. I think they might have added a little time on the end just to be safe -- which is better." Wood is expected to miss a...

This is an important spring for Jeremy Sowers. It was, therefore, a bad spring for him to fall behind the other pitchers in training camp. But that's what happened to the former No. 1 draft pick, who spent much of the offseason rehabbing a left shoulder strain.

That injury caused Sowers to fall behind the other pitchers early in camp. He didn't make his first appearance in a spring game until March 18, a two-inning stint vs. Cincinnati in which he gave up two runs on three hits in two innings.

Manager Manny Acta said Sowers, if healthy, will get regular turns to pitch through the end of training camp. At that point, the Indians will have to make a decision on the 26-year-old lefty.

Sowers is out of minor league options.
After an extended outage, Travis Hafner may be getting his power back. Hafner's three-run homer onto a sidewalk beyond the right-field wall capped Cleveland's eight-run second inning off Jason Jennings and sent the Indians to a 12-4 win over a split squad of Oakland Athletics on Saturday. Hafner homered for the second time in three days, launching the type of deep shot the Indians hope to...
Cleveland Indians minor league second baseman Manuel Boscan has been suspended 50 games after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. Boscan is the second Indians player in the Dominican Summer League in two days to be banned for failing a test. Pitcher Jeffry Cleto was suspended 50 games Thursday.
If the Cleveland Indians are to contend in the AL Central in 2010, they will need a reliable rotation, particularly in the No. 3 spot. That's where Justin Masterson comes in. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound right-hander had been a setup man early in his career with Boston, but after coming to Cleveland last August in the trade for catcher Victor Martinez, he started 10 of 11 games.
A day in the field was just what Texas Rangers slugger Vladimir Guerrero needed to end his struggles at the plate. Guerrero, making his first appearance of the spring in right field, went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored as the Rangers lost 12-2 to a Cleveland Indians split-squad Friday. "He got through it healthy, which is the big thing," said Rangers manager Ron Washington.
This Carlos Santana makes sweet music with his bat. The Cleveland Indians aren't quite ready to hear it. While he shares the same name as the legendary rock guitarist, Cleveland's hard-hitting catcher -- and perhaps a future All-Star -- will have to wait for his day in the spotlight. The Indians optioned Santana to Triple-A Columbus on Friday, one of eight players to be sent back to the...
Indians third-base coach Steve Smith never imagined any experience topping the joy of winning a World Series. Racing around the world with his daughter changed his mind. The bootful of beer wasn't bad, either. Four days after he was hired by new Cleveland manager Manny Acta, Smith and his daughter, Allie, embarked on a globe-trotting jaunt as contestants on the popular CBS reality show "The...
Jeremy Sowers had a better day than his beloved alma mater. Sowers, whose spring debut was delayed by a sore shoulder, gave up a two-run homer to Cincinnati's Jonny Gomes in the second inning but Travis Hafner hit a tape-measure shot in the fifth as Cleveland rallied for a 6-2 win over the Reds on Thursday, the Indians' fourth straight over their new Arizona housemates.
Fausto Carmona had his second strong outing of spring training Wednesday night, allowing only a pair of hits over four innings of the Cleveland Indians' 8-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The right-hander was an All-Star in 2007 and got off to a good start the next season before a strained left hip knocked him out of sync.
All morning, Rockies reliever Randy Flores took part in a drill designed to improve the dexterity and reflexes of the pitchers. Still, the exercise couldn't prepare him for the liner off the bat of Cleveland's Chris Gimenez. Before Flores even had time to flinch, the ball caught him squarely on the left forearm, leaving behind quite a bruise.
Under a baby blue Arizona sky on a back field at Cleveland's heavenly training complex, the team's top offseason acquisition is taking practice swings -- outside the batting cage. Grabbing a fungo bat, the Indians' new No. 11 shouts instructions across the diamond to infielders busy smoothing divots in the dirt with their cleats.
As Jake Westbrook ran sprints in the outfield grass, a Cleveland fan leaned over the railing in right field and offered his critique. "Hey, Jake," the man hollered. "Great outing." Westbrook smiled. "Thanks," he said. One more step in the comeback complete. Westbrook, whose career was nearly ended by an elbow injury, outpitched two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum, Shin...
The Cleveland Indians have acquired right-hander Omar Aguilar from the Milwaukee Brewers. In return for the 25-year-old, the Brewers are keeping left-hander Chuck Lofgren. Milwaukee selected him in the Rule 5 Draft in December. To send Lofgren to their minor-league system, the Brewers had to work out a deal with Cleveland or offer him back to the Indians for half the $50,000 they paid in the draft.
Yovani Gallardo wants to start on opening day for the first time. He's making his strongest argument yet. Gallardo struck out five in four solid innings and rookie Alcides Escobar knocked in his ninth run of the spring, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday.
Kerry Wood insists everything is fine and there's no reason to worry. The Cleveland Indians aren't taking any chances. Wood, bothered by soreness in a muscle under his shoulder, did not throw a scheduled bullpen session on Monday so he could get more rest. Cleveland's closer was scratched from a scheduled exhibition appearance on Saturday against Texas because of soreness in the lat...
Chris Young had his second straight solid start in his comeback from a shoulder injury in the San Diego Padres' 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Young, whose season ended in June last year, allowed five hits and two runs over 3 2-3 innings. A healthy Young is penciled in as San Diego's No.
The Cleveland Indians lost a game and may not have Kerry Wood for at least a few days either. Brandon McCarthy pitched three scoreless innings for the Texas Rangers in a 5-0 win over the Indians, who had won five in a row and played two ties so far this spring. Wood was scheduled to pitch, but was unavailable on Saturday.
