Jays Information
Toronto is
added to the list of Major League cities in 1976 as the expansion
team the Blue Jays is started. The first game in Toronto was won
by the Blue Jays on April 7th, 1977 as they outscored the White
Sox 9-5 in the snow at Exhibition Stadium.
The name
the Blue Jays was selected through a “Name the Team”
contest in which there were 30,000 entries.
Despite losing
107 games in their first season the Blue Jays attracted 1,701,052
fans setting a new record for attendance to an exhibition team.
The Blue
Jays won back to back World Series Championships in 1992 and 1993
defeating the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
The Jays
played in Exhibition Stadium from 1977 to 1988 before the move
to the Skydome occurred in time for the 1989 season. Buy Blue
Jays Tickets Over the All-Star break of 2002 the Blue Jays were
looking at a record of 34-52. Needing to do something to get the
season on the right track manager Buck Martinez was replaced by
Carlos Tosca. The Blue Jays did turn the season around going 43-32
in the 2nd half of the season and winning 16 of their last 20
games and ending the season in 3rd place in the AL East. Rookie
of the Year Eric Hinske and Josh Phelps helped pull the Jays back
into the swing of things with Phelps batting in 58 RBIs in just
74 games after being brought up from the minors. Roy Halladay
also had a great season on the mound with 19 wins and 7 losses
as he represented the Jays in the All-Star Game. April 2003 proved
to be a struggle for the Jays as they post a 10-18 record. Fortunately
on May 1st Roy Halladay records his first win of the season sparking
the Blue Jays to win 21 of 29 games in May. That win was the 1st
of 15 straight for Halladay as he and the rest of the team were
on a roll. Carlos Delgado was on record setting pace for RBIs
at the All-Star Break with 97. The Jays finished the season strong
after a slight slump after the break. Halladay finished with a
22-7 record earning him a Cy Young. Meanwhile Delgado finishes
2nd in AL MVP voting behind Alex Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers
as he records 42 homeruns and 145 RBIs. 2004 was a year of rebuilding
for the Blue Jays. The Jays struggled all season as injuries to
key players plagued the team. After getting swept in the first
series of the year things looked bleak from the eyes of Toronto
fans. Even in May after Frank Catalanotto’s six-hit night
the losses kept piling up. After Josh Phelps was traded mid season
many call-ups from the minors brought in some needed youth. In
a December off season move the Jays released Carlos Delgado and
signed Corey Koskie to a three-year deal. With large roster changes
put into action the Jays hope they can turn it around for 2005
and try to recreate their days in the early 90’s.
Joey Gathright's specialty is speed. His problem is that he's not getting on base enough for the Toronto Blue Jays this spring to showcase it. If anything is going to consign Gathright to Triple-A it's going to be his bat -- a .200 average with six singles in 30 at-bats, one walk and six strikeouts.
<p>Dustin McGowan pitched in a game for the first time since July 2008 when he faced the Pittsburgh Pirates' Triple-A team March 19 at the Blue Jays minor-league complex.</p>
<p>But McGowan, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, didn't throw as well as he had hoped. Instead, he had a "dead arm" experience and could hit only 88-89 mph on the gun.</p>
<p>McGowan said he was advised that he would probably hit the wall at some point this spring during his recovery, that it was something to be expected. How he feels in the following days will be more telling.</p>
<p>"It wasn't the greatest day of all days, but I got through it," he said. "It was not where I want to be (velocity-wise), but that's how I felt today.
After the Toronto Blue Jays pounded Derek Lowe for four early runs Saturday, the Atlanta right-hander will be very happy if he never has to pitch another interleague game. "American League teams, we all know, feast on fastballs," Lowe said after the Blue Jays chewed him up for four fourth-inning runs en route to a 7-6 victory in 10 innings.
Toronto pitcher Brandon Morrow said Saturday he expects to make his next scheduled start despite being scratched from a game the day before with a sore right shoulder. Fellow right-hander Dustin McGowan was shut down for a week due to a tired arm, one day after pitching in a game for the first time in nearly 21 months.
Toronto right-hander Dustin McGowan pitched 1 2-3 innings Friday against minor leaguers in his first game in nearly 21 months. McGowan expressed some dissatisfaction with the 36-pitch performance, and said he accepts that he won't be on the Blue Jays' Opening Day roster. "I pretty much knew the situation coming in (to training camp).
Randy Ruiz had grown to expect that a phone call from his team's front office meant only one thing: pack your bags and get ready to move on to a new franchise. But after being released five times in 11 minor league seasons while playing for 10 different organizations, Ruiz hopes he's finally found some stability with the Toronto Blue Jays.
For Baltimore right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, this spring is looking very much like last year's, just as his performance Thursday looked a lot like his previous one. Guthrie gave up three of Toronto's six home runs, including two by Travis Snider, as the Blue Jays battered Baltimore 13-3. Guthrie was tagged for seven runs in three innings, not far different from the four runs on eight hits the...
SARASOTA, Fla. - Left-hander Brian Tallet allowed one hit over four innings, a leadoff single by Cesar Izturis in the first, and retired the last 12 batters he faced to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
Left-hander Brian Tallet allowed one hit over four innings, a leadoff single by Cesar Izturis in the first, and retired the last 12 batters he faced to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Travis Snider hit a solo home run off reliever Kam Mickolio in the fifth to help the Blue Jays win for only the second time in six games.
With Brad Mills managing against his former team, Roy Oswalt allowed two hits in four innings Tuesday to lead the Houston Astros over a Boston Red Sox split squad 3-0. Mills was Terry Francona's bench for six seasons before the Astros hired him as manager last October. Oswalt struck out one and walked one.
Armando Galarraga is not overly concerned with his slow start this spring. Galarraga allowed three runs, all earned in three innings while the Tigers topped the Toronto Blue Jays 10-7 on Monday. His spring training ERA jumped to 11.57. "They got some hits, but they were mostly ground balls that found holes," Galarraga said.
Jason Frasor conceded he was stubborn on the mound Sunday against the Atlanta Braves. That explains why they pounded the Toronto relief pitcher for four runs in 1-3 of an inning in an 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays. "The changeup was terrible; the fastball was good," said Frasor, a candidate for the Blue Jays' closer role.
Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos wouldn't deny he's interested in Cuban defector Adeinis Hechavarria, but he declined to comment on a published report that the team might be close to signing the shortstop for $10 million. The New York Post reported Sunday the Jays were closing in on the talented 21-year-old prospect.

Ricky Romero had another strong start on Saturday, pitching four shutout innings and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-0. It wasn't perfect for Romero who struck out four, but also walked four under windy conditions, but he said the key was that he was able to pitch out of jams.
Becoming a coach isn't on John McDonald's radar just yet, but while he's playing he enjoys being a mentor to his fellow Toronto Blue Jays infielders. "I would hope the younger players would use a player like me as a source of knowledge," said the 35-year-old McDonald, primarily a shortstop who has spent parts of 11 major league seasons between Cleveland and Toronto, plus a...
A relaxed Andy Sonnanstine gave the Tampa Bay Rays a glimpse of the pitcher that helped them get to the World Series. The right-hander, who lost his spot in the starting rotation last season after helping the Rays win the AL pennant in 2008, pitched four scoreless innings in Thursday's 4-1 split-squad victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Kyle Drabek, the pitcher the Toronto Blue Jays coveted and finally got in the trade that sent ace Roy Halladay to Philadelphia, tried to treat Wednesday's start against the Phillies like any other game. It was good advice from his father, 1990 National League Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek. The result: two scoreless innings, one walk and one hit allowed in the Phillies' 4-2 victory.
