The
Oakland Athletics have a strong fan base and rightfully so with past
super stars such as Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers, Mark
McGwire, and Jose Canseco just to name a few. The 2007 Oakland
A's is not full of house name baseball players but they are loaded
with some good young talent that needs to blossom for the Oakland
A's to make a playoff run. The Oakland A's have a young talented pitching
staff with future potential aces such as Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, and
Rich Harden. The A's are banking on Eric Chavez to have a big season
offensively. If the young pitching staff comes threw and some players
step up and provide some offense the Oakland A's could make a playoff
run in 2007. The biggest obstacle for the Oakland A's in the AL west
this season should be the Angels.

Athletics Information
The Athletics
were originally formed in Philadelphia and played there from 1901
through 1954 when they were moved to Kansas City, MO. The A’s
only played in Kansas City for 13 seasons before making their
home at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland in 1968.
Since their
move to Oakland the A’s have appeared in 6 World Series
winning 4 of them in 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1989. They have also
won the AL Western Division 13 times including 5 seasons in a
row from 1971 to 1975.
The Athletics
have brought home the Rookie of the Year award 4 times with Jose
Conseco in 1986, Mark McGwire in 1987, Walt Weiss in 1988, and
Ben Grieve in 1998.
Retired numbers
include 9 for Reggie Jackson, 27 worn by Jim “Catfish”
Hunter, and 34 sported by Rollie Fingers. Buy Athletics Tickets
In the off-season after 2001 the Athletics lost their top slugger
Jason Giambi to the high paying Yankees. After the loss of Giambi
the A’s struggled early in the season playing less than
.500 baseball through early June. Fortunately, as the weather
in Oakland heated up so did the A’s. In August Oakland was
on fire as Miguel Tejada steps out of the shadows of the powerful
AL shortstops to help put together an AL record 20 game winning
streak. Tejada would go on to win the American League MVP award
as Barry Zito won the Cy Young with a 23-5 record and Billy Koch
earns the Fireman Award for 44 saves. However, the A’s lost
the ALDS to the also hot Minnesota Twins in 5 games Under new
management in 2003 the A’s struggled once again early in
the season. It wasn’t until July that the Athletics began
to chip away at the six game lead of the Mariners. In August the
A’s would overtake the Mariners and go on to win their second
straight division title with a 96-66 record. The A’s jumped
out fast on the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS as they took a 2-0
series lead. Game 3 was a nail-biter as the A’s looked to
close out the Red Sox but were unsuccessful as Trot Nixon hits
an 11th inning game winning homerun to extend the series. The
Red Sox went on to win the next two games as the A’s lost
the ALDS in 5 games for the 4th year in a row and the 9th straight
playoff game in which the A’s could have ended the series.
The 2004 season for the A’s was plagued with injuries as
Tim Hudson and Eric Chavez went down with serious disabilities.
However, the A’s had back up players who really stepped
up to fill their places and help keep Oakland in the Division
race all the way to the last week of the regular season. Unfortunately
the A’s were unable to keep their streak of four consecutive
playoff appearances as they finish 1 game behind the Angels of
Anaheim. Not only was the disappointment of missing the playoffs
hard to take for Oakland fans, but in December general manager
Beane broke up the “Big Three” as he traded away Tim
Hudson to Atlanta and Mulder to St. Louis just two days later.

When the A's offered Marco Scutaro more money and more years than Boston did this winter, it was apparent that the team isn't entirely sold on Cliff Pennington as the everyday shortstop.

Scutaro chose the Red Sox, so Pennington remains the frontrunner for Oakland's shortstop job. But don't count out Adam Rosales.

Rosales was obtained from Cincinnati in the deal that sent Aaron Miles to the Reds and brought outfielder Willy Taveras and his $4 million salary to Oakland; the A's dumped Taveras and will pay all or nearly all of his salary this year. So they've made an investment in Rosales, 26.

Rosales was considered a possibility as the team's utility player, but with Eric Chavez showing that he is, so far, healthy as he comes back from two back surgeries and three...
Oakland Athletics left-handed starting pitchers past and present engaged in a duel on Wednesday. It was pretty much a draw between Barry Zito and Brett Anderson. Zito won the American League Cy Young Award with Oakland in 2002 but hasn't found the same magic in San Francisco. He gave up one run on four hits, walked three and struck out two in 3 1-3 innings before the Giants rallied for a 6-1...
Ben Sheets was battered for 10 runs without retiring a batter in his latest poor showing, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Oakland Athletics 13-5 Monday. Sheets signed a one-year, $10 million contract with Oakland after missing last season with elbow problems that required surgery. He gave up eight hits and a walk, and another batter reached on an error.
Eric Chavez's bat may have been quiet but his glove was active. Playing in two consecutive games for the first time since last April, Chavez handled seven chances in the field flawlessly Sunday in Oakland's 10-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Chavez, who was 0-for-3 at the plate, will sit out two days and then play in two consecutive games again.
Former major league infielder Dallas McPherson was among the 10 players the Oakland Athletics reassigned to their minor league camp on Sunday. The team also reassigned right-handed pitchers Sam Demel and Matt Wright, left-handed pitcher Cedrick Bowers, catchers Joel Galarraga and Max Stassi, and infielders Grant Green, Jemile Weeks, Matt Whitney and Corey Wimberly.
Oakland right-hander Clayton Mortensen is on the fringe of the competition for the final spot in the Athletics' rotation. Finally getting a start gave him a chance to stretch things out. San Diego right-hander Kevin Correia threw more than 60 pitches in his third start of the spring with mixed results.
Gio Gonzalez might ride his new-look changeup right into the Oakland Athletics' rotation. He sure is making a strong case to be the A's fifth starter. The left-hander, competing with Trevor Cahill and Vin Mazzaro to win the job, pitched three scoreless innings and struck out three in his first start of the spring as Oakland beat Bay Area rival San Francisco 8-7 on Saturday.
The Diamondbacks acquired Adam LaRoche for his consistent bat and stellar defense. Arizona manager A.J. Hinch also likes the first baseman's leadership. Little seems to faze the soft-spoken LaRoche, traded from Pittsburgh to Boston to Atlanta during the season last year. He had a career-high 154 hits and made only two errors.
With all his injuries over the past few years, Oakland right-hander Justin Duchscherer wasn't about to let a line drive off his left thumb keep him off the mound. Duchscherer threw 30 pitches in a simulated game Friday, his first outing against hitters this spring training. Max Stassi's line drive caught Duchscherer on his left thumb, which then ricocheted off his right shoulder.
Milwaukee's biggest offseason acquisition is working on a nice spring with his new team. Randy Wolf struck out four in three scoreless innings Thursday, but Gabe Gross hit a two-run triple against his former team in the seventh and Michael Taylor added a three-run homer in the eighth to power the Oakland Athletics to a 7-3 win over a Brewers split-squad.
Dallas Braden has found a whole new role to play for the Oakland Athletics' young pitching staff. He's become a second set of eyes to many of the younger hurlers. Braden, at age 26, is older than all but Ben Sheets and Justin Duchscherer among possible A's starters. But after an offseason in which he helped the University of Pacific pitchers, he's discovered a taste for instruction.

His command isn't quite there and his fastball velocity is slightly down. He is unfazed, because Sheets has never been one to post big spring numbers. Oakland's new $10 million ace still considered his short outing in a 9-5 loss Wednesday to the Chicago White Sox a step in the...

Coco Crisp leaned over to pick up his bat from the on-deck circle and felt a "prickle" in his left hamstring. He still took his third at-bat Tuesday, and his leg told him two more times he wasn't right: in the batter's box and running to first on a single. The new Oakland Athletics center fielder said Wednesday he has a strain in the hamstring and it isn't clear how long he...
Rich Harden breezed through the first two innings but never finished the third in his second outing with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. Harden gave up four runs on two hits in 2 2-3 innings. He struck out four, walked three and threw a wild pitch in the Rangers' 8-8 tie with a split-squad of Oakland Athletics.
Rick Ankiel homered and drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat an Oakland Athletics split-squad 11-10 Tuesday. The Royals trailed 5-0 after two innings and 8-3 going into the sixth when Ankiel hit a three-run homer. Ankiel also singled home David DeJesus in the fourth.
Ryan Dempster tossed two perfect innings in his spring debut and the Chicago Cubs beat the Oakland Athletics 10-3 on Monday. Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez each drove in a run for the Cubs. Ryan Theriot had two hits, walked once and scored twice. Brett Anderson pitched 1 2-3 scoreless innings and Kurt Suzuki homered for the A's.
Former Major League Baseball executive vice president Sandy Alderson has been hired by the commissioner's office as a consultant to help reform Dominican Republic operations. A former president and general manager of the Oakland Athletics and chief executive officer of the San Diego Padres, Alderson chaired a committee on Dominican operations last year.
There were moments in early spring games when A's manager Bob Geren could have been looking at a reflection in a mirror as Eric Chavez made plays at first base. The six-time Gold Glove third baseman has no problem with grounders, pop ups and feeding the pitcher. Footwork may be a different story, along with handling throws up the line.

Oakland right-hander Jason Jennings, who signed with the Athletics on Sunday, is scheduled to pitch in a game within a week. Jennings threw live batting practice for the first time on Wednesday and will throw one more time in game-like situations before the A's slot him into their pitching plans.
